A Hiatus

Posted in Announcements, on July 19th, 2010 by Carlos.

I’m sure you have noticed my sudden decrease in postings which occurred several weeks ago (yikes – my last post was about the iPhone 4 announcement). Given that this is purely a hobby site for me, and when my work or personal life gets too busy, I generally tend to ignore Keys That Click. As I don’t have any sponsors, or readers for that matter (aside from those that come in from Google Searches about my backup strategies and a few other popular posts), I’m not too broken up about it, and I hope you aren’t either!

Another reason I’ve drastically reduced my postings is that I haven’t been motivated to write about anything that already doesn’t have millions of articles/opinions on the Internets. Sure, I like having my opinion heard, but if I’m not passionate enough about it, I find it hard to get motivated to spend a good deal of time writing up an article. I found I became what I feared most – just another design blog. I mean there’s nothing wrong with design blogs, and there are several I still check out, but there’s just so many now. To do it right requires more time than I have available at the moment.

So, for now, I am signing off, but you can always catch me on Twitter @keysthatclick which I tweet on from time to time. This isn’t the utter end of Keys That Click, and I’m sure I’ll revisit the site and continue on posting in the future. But for now… a hiatus.

New and Improved! Introducing the newly designed Keys That Click

Posted in Announcements, on April 20th, 2010 by Carlos.

I started Keys That Click in December of last year seeing if this blogging thing would pan out. Compared to my past attempts at blogging, this has been the most successful attempt yet. Given that I was unsure of my intentions when I first started, I had created the site based on WordPress using a free theme called Lightword that was beautifully designed and executed. My goal, however, was to create something original…. and I finally did. I’d like to introduce my newly designed site (I can’t say redesigned since I didn’t design the original look)! Given that it is my first WordPress theme, there may be a few kinks to work out, but I’m very pleased with it so far.

I used a dash of CSS3, some jQuery and a whole bunch of tutorials (thanks specifically for this tutorial on bavotasan.com which provided the code and know-how to build out the comments section). Knowing it wasn’t a theme I’d be distributing I took some short-cuts and liberties to speed things along. I also used @font-face to embed the Miso font that looks similar to FF Netto. I grabbed it and the code and font files from Font-Squirrel in case you are interested.

For you Internet Explorer users, everything should work, but the site won’t have the same visual appeal as Safari and Firefox users will experience. I used CSS3 rounded corners and shadows that will show up all boxy and boring for incompatible browsers (see the screenshot above to see what I’m talking about). Even the @font-face doesn’t look as clean (I’ll see if I do something about that with subbing in a system font instead). And for IE6 users – well, sorry. I used a heavy amount of transparent PNGs, and a whole bunch of other stuff that I just know will cripple the browser. Given this is still somewhat of a hobby site for me, I couldn’t justify putting in the hours to make this site look right and work in that antiquated browser. It feels nice to move on!

I look forward to any feedback that you may provide, and please let me know if you experience any technical difficulties and I’ll try to look after them right away. I’m hoping that this will be another kick in the pants to get me in gear to keep on posting articles. In the meantime, enjoy!

FeedBurner to Twitter

Posted in Announcements, on March 18th, 2010 by Carlos.

I’ve been experiencing trouble with my WordPress Twitter plugin (WP to Twitter) where my URLs aren’t getting shortened automatically, thus explaining my test posts every now and then. It use to work flawlessly, using bit.ly to shorten the URLs, but that broke upon upgrading WordPress to 2.9. The most recent update to the plugin broke the cli.gs shortener I had fallen back to. So now I’m trying to see if Google’s FeedBurner will work instead with their Socialize feature. Sorry for all the junk.

Happy Holidays from Keys That Click!

I’d like to wish my loyal readers (all two or three of you) a very Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! I’ll likely be keeping things pretty quiet over the next week and a half, but hope to pick things up again in the New Year. 2010 should be an exciting year!

Cheers,
Carlos

Introducing Keys That Click

Posted in Announcements, on December 2nd, 2009 by Carlos.

I’ve always had an itch to write about my experiences as a business owner, specifically in the design industry. Keys That Click will be my avenue for that. I hope to cover off topics related to working and dealing with clients, hardware/software that help get the job done, tips/tricks/tutorials for Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign and the many many other things that may come my way in the daily life of a designer and business owner.

And of course, because the worlds of business and design don’t exist in their own little bubbles, I’ll be writing about other topics that may be of interest to my future audience such as technology, media and perhaps even social issues that may have impact on this line of work.

If you know me, you probably know I’ve tried blogging before, only to stall after only a few hours/days/weeks into it (depending on situation). This time, with a name, logo and registered domain, I’m looking to build something of substance here. To start I’m using this amazing free WordPress theme, but will look to create my own template in the future. After all, I am a designer, so it would only be appropriate.

If you would like to learn more about me, please check out the About page where I’ve posted some bio tidbits. And if you have any suggestions about what topics you’d like to see covered, just let me know in the comments and I’ll try my best to write about it.
